Originating as a research project at MIT in 2017, Gataca emerged in response to the flaws in conventional internet authentication systems, which were recognized as significant contributors to cybersecurity breaches and identity theft.

Gataca technology comprises the following products:
Gataca Wallet is a mobile app that enables users to store and share verifiable credentials to authenticate easily in digital services.
These credentials, such as a national ID, an academic diploma, or an employee card, are digitized following open standards, cryptographically signed by authorities to ensure their authenticity, and protected with biometrics and strong encryption so only the users can decide who access their data.

Gataca Studio is a cloud platform solution enabling organizations to interact with ID Wallets—all managed from a simple dashboard. It includes:
• Gataca Self Sovereign Identity (SSI): It enables organizations to connect with ID Wallets to issue and verify W3C Verifiable Credentials, in compliance with the updated European Regulation on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions (eIDAS), officially Regulation (EU) No 910/2014, as amended by (EU) 2024/1183.
• Gataca Vouch: Single Sign-On (SSO) cloud service designed to help organizations verify the identity and other information of their end users, ensuring the highest standards of user privacy and security. It offers pre-defined Age Verification services that are fully compliant with DSA and GDPR regulations.
